One of Charleston’s favorite spots, Waterfront Park, was rededicated to the former mayor of 40 years, Joseph P. Riley this past Saturday.

When former Mayor Riley took office in 1975, he kick-started the processes of bringing what is known as Waterfront Park today.

“It was the vision of Mayor Riley that created Waterfront Park and together with all Charlestonians we at Lowe pledge our best efforts in achieving the next phase of Mayor Riley’s dream,” says Lowe’s senior VP of Charleston development Dan Battista, “the continued expansion of the park providing additional public access to Charleston’s waterfront.”

To go with the name of the park, the city is to update the park’s granite blocks with limestone.

The new update is to cost the city $270,000 and an additional $40,000 for design services from Sasaki and Associates.

Sasaki and Associates are no stranger to designing for Waterfront Park, as they designed the original park before 1990.

“Thanks to Joe Riley, Charleston is today a place where civic excellence is a civic virtue. It is a place where the public realm is a public treasure and a public tribute that our citizens pay to one another,” says current mayor John Tecklenburg.
