New In Charleston

CARTA Brings Free Shuttle From Mount Pleasant to Isle of Palms

With recent changes to the parking regulations along Isle of Palms, a new shuttle service is offering a free and easy way to get to the beach.

CARTA is now offering a free beach shuttle service from Mount Pleasant to Isle of Palms. The shuttle will run on Saturdays and Sundays from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm from now until October 18th.

The shuttle service departs every hour from the Charleston County East Cooper Service Center, stopping at both 14th Ave. at Ocean Blvd. and Palm Blvd. at 28th Ave.

While this is a great way for people to enjoy our beautiful beaches and current fall weather, there are some rules and regulations that shuttle users need to be aware of. Most notably, you are required to wear a mask or face covering at all times while you are on the shuttle. There’s also a limit on the type and number of items you are allowed to bring with you aboard the shuttle.

Download the app to see where the shuttle is at all times and effectively plan your next beach trip.

IOP Will Begin Implementing Public Parking Restrictions

The once free parking offered at Isle of Palms may no longer be available for beach go-ers come summer 2021. The choice to monetize parking came after COVID-19. IOP residents recently issued a temporary parking ban for non-residents along busy neighborhood streets. Now, public parking restrictions will impact weekday and weekend parking times.

Instead of the current 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., the city is looking to enforce 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. This time frame forces non-residents into a curfew.

While during the Coronavirus pandemic, chairs, coolers, and umbrellas were no longer allowed, it seems the city is making more strides toward seclusion from non-residents. Parking violation charges increased by double as of May 30th for municipal parking lots. These designated public parking zones are subject to change.

“The issue is the number of cars and parking, it’s not trying to restrict and limit people’s access to the beach,” said Councilmember Randy Bell. “We have an automobile problem. We don’t have the room to park as many that wish to come here.”

In order for next year’s changes to be made possible, a decision must be finalized no later than this August. For now, it seems things are headed toward stricter parking enforcement across the island.

Whether you’re visiting Charleston for the first time, you just moved here, or you’ve lived here all your life, there are a few MUST-see and do things that everyone should experience at least once.

Here are 9 things that should be on everyone’s Charleston bucket list:

Walk or Run Over the Ravenel Bridge

In addition to being a great way to exercise, this activity is also free and offers incredible views of the Charleston harbor at the midpoint of the bridge.

Visit the Angel Oak Tree

A trip out to John’s Island, which is just outside Charleston, is a must-see day trip destination that everyone needs to experience at least once. Check out the famous Angel Oak Tree, a historic 500-year-old tree in the heart of Wadmalaw.

Check Out Patriot’s Point and the USS Yorktown

The docks at the Patriot’s Point marina offer incredible views of the Charleston harbor. History bluffs will also love touring the Yorktown, a decommissioned World War II aircraft carrier.

Ride Horses on the Beach

The Seabrook Equestrian Center is the only place that offers horse riding on the beach in Charleston. This activity gives animal lovers a chance to trot or gallop along the breaking waves of the beautiful South Carolina coastline.

Walk in the Middle of King Street during Second Sunday

On the second Sunday of each month, King Street is closed off to vehicular traffic from Calhoun Street to Queen Street. This event is popular amongst locals and tourists alike, as restaurants and shops congregate along the street to showcase and sample their goods.

Take a Ghost Tour of the Old Jail

Having housed some of the city’s most infamous criminals, the Old Jail is supposedly one of the most haunted places in all of Charleston. Take a nighttime ghost tour, if you’re feeling extra adventurous.

Visit the Pitt Street Bridge

One of Charleston’s lesser-known spots, the Pitt Street Bridge is nestled between greater Mount Pleasant and Fort Moultrie and offers amazing views of the harbor and the cove. Venture through old Mt. Pleasant and grab a bite to eat at the famous Pitt Street Pharmacy.

Walk Along The Battery

The Battery is one of Charleston’s most iconic locations, encompassing the ocean walkway, white point gardens, and of course the picturesque southern mansions that line East Battery Street. Take a walk around the fortified seawall and admire the beauty and history of downtown Charleston.

Take a Ferry to Fort Sumter

Fort Sumter is known for being the location of the first battle of the Civil War and is the only National Park in Charleston. Take a tour of the fort and experience the stunning views of both the Charleston harbor and the Atlantic ocean.

zodiac signs as lowcountry cities

Here’s What Lowcountry City You Are Based On Your Zodiac Sign

Much like the signs of the zodiac, the Lowcountry is made up of towns and cities with their own traits and characteristics that make them unique. And, because everything can be compared to a zodiac sign, we’re breaking down which part of the Lowcountry you are based on your astrological sign.

Aries – Charleston

As if an Aries could be any other part of the Lowcountry (or state) than Charleston. Just like the first sign of the zodiac, Charleston has consistently been the number one city in the state and by some, the country. It’s also the most active city of the Lowcountry and everyone knows that an Aries is the energizer bunny of the zodiac.

Taurus – Hilton Head

As a Taurus, you enjoy being pampered and experiencing the finer things in life, but you also crave outdoor adventures. You like the best of both worlds and what other city in the Lowcountry knows the best of both worlds better than Hilton Head? This little island has it all from epic spas and luxurious resorts to sport fishing charters and ziplining.

Gemini – Beaufort

Gemini’s are history-obsessed and love learning new things, so naturally, Gemini’s would be the oldest town in not only the Lowcountry but the whole state. Beaufort’s history dates back to the early 1700s and with that much history in one city, there’s something new to learn each and every day.

Cancer – Old Town Bluffton

Not to be confused with the entire town of Bluffton which you’ll see later in this list (talking about you Capricorn), Old Town Bluffton is a safe, laid-back town with beautiful views and makes for a perfect place to raise a family. And, Cancer’s are all about family and relaxation.

Leo – Kiawah Island

Oh, Leo’s. You are the glam ones of the bunch. You enjoy being admired and like to be seen as radiant and magical. Much like Kiawah. Between Kiawah Island’s sprawling mansions and world-class golfing, it’s definitely the most glamorous part of the Lowcountry, just like you.

Virgo – Walterboro

Quiet, careful Virgo, you are the epitome of small-town vibes. You don’t like to stand out or speak up unless needed and you enjoy living your life without anything shaking up your normal routine too much. You’re not over the top and you’re pretty practical, which is why you’re the Walterboro of the Lowcountry.

Libra – Seabrook Island

Seabrook Island is the more lowkey Kiawah Island. It’s not as flashy, but just as gorgeous and relaxing and everyone still adores you. And, when you’re an island most of your residents tend to socialize which is just like you, you social butterfly.

Scorpio – Sullivan’s Island

You’re the mysterious one that not everyone knows about but when they find out about you, they’re absolutely obsessed. Similar to Sullivan’s Island which is often overshadowed by Isle of Palms and Folly. Don’t ever feel bad for Sullivan’s and Scorpios though, they know their charm and what they’re capable of.

Sagittarius – Mount Pleasant

Always on the move and exploring, aren’t you Sagittarius? So is Mount Pleasant. It’s always growing, always bustling, and there’s always something to do. You don’t limit yourself, Sagittarius and neither does Mount Pleasant.

Capricorn – Bluffton

Capricorn’s are some ambitious people. When they set out to do something, there’s no stopping them. And, when Bluffton first came about it was only one square mile. Now, that part of town is simply known as Old Town Bluffton and the entire town of Bluffton has a population over 20,000. It was the little town that could and did.

Aquarius – Folly Beach

Little creative Picasso’s. Much like Folly Beach you’re unlike anything or anyone else. You’re creative, easy-going, and eccentric. And, we’re just taking a guess but we’d say about 95 percent of Folly Beach’s local residents are Aquarians.

Pisces – Edisto Island

If there was one sign who would be fine wandering off alone and diving into a body of water without anyone near, it’d be you. You like to escape reality and love being around water so of course, you’d be an island. And, Edisto is one of the most secluded of the islands in the Lowcountry.

Which Lowcountry city are you?

#6 Rooftop Bar Hop

After you’ve seen the sights of the gorgeous city and gotten a nice tan from the beach, the nightlife in Charleston is something you don’t want to miss out on. Any rooftop bar has a phenomenal view of the city and the water surrounding it. Start off at the Vendue rooftop bar right down the street from Waterfront Park to get the best water views. Then make your way to the chic Grand Bohemian Hotel where ascending in the elevator brings you to the lavish rooftop where you can indulge in a fresh mojito followed by some savory appetizers. Stop by the Market Pavilion Hotel rooftop or Restoration Hotel Rooftop, The Watch, for a classy look over the city. If you want to venture out to a more Americanized bar, Henry’s is the place to go.

#7 Sunday Funday

You haven’t truly experienced Charleston until you brunch in Charleston. Sundays are all about the Bloody Marys and Bottomless Mimosas. Sunday brunch is a lifestyle in the Holy City, so you should plan on making reservations to beat the crowds. Enjoy a caraffe of bubbling mimosas while indulging in a truly southern brunch style meal. If you’re looking for a higher end brunch, Hall’s Chophouse, The Macintosh, The Palmetto Cafe, and Poogan’s porch are legendary for their brunch menus. Feeling a more casual experience, Toast, Low Country Bistro, and Hominy Grill have people lining the streets to get in. Enjoy the outside patio at the oldest bar in Charleston at Blind Tiger or a renovated church with stained glass windows and high ceilings at 5Church right off Market Street. If you’re looking to go somewhere off the peninsula, Shelter is perfect for outdoor seating and cocktails.
