‘Rein’ It In To Steeplechase of Charleston This Weekend

Make a spur of the moment decision and venture out to the Stono Ferry Racetrack on Saturday, November 15th for this year’s Steeplechase of Charleston.

Steeplechase of Charleston is a Charleston tradition dating back to 1792 and features five high-stakes horse races. This family-friendly event packs a full day of fun that everyone will enjoy.

In between the races, spectators will have the opportunity to get a headstart on their holiday shopping by browsing the Vendor Village, which will have a variety of artisan goods and services available for purchase.

Steeplechase of Charleston has implemented new safety measures in response to the current pandemic. For example, tailgate spots are only able to accommodate five people, guests must provide their own food and drinks to enjoy and guests are required to wear masks when they leave their designated tailgate spot.

Gates open at 8:00 AM and the opening ceremonies begin promptly at 12:30 PM.

Sea Turtle Care Center: Rescue, Rehabilitate, Release

Featured Image: Massive Science

The South Carolina Aquarium is home to more than just fish. The aquarium’s Sea Turtle Care Center™ encompasses both the original Sea Turtle Hospital and the newer expansion – the Zucker Family Sea Turtle Recovery.

Every species of sea turtle is threatened or endangered, and the SC Aquarium believes that the preservation of these charismatic animals is critical to the health of the marine ecosystem.

When a sea turtle is found stranded or injured off the coast of South Carolina, the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (SCDNR) brings the animal to the Sea Turtle Care Center for treatment from dedicated staff and volunteers. Sea turtles can arrive suffering from any number of illnesses or injuries. Most commonly, sea turtles are brought in due to either debilitated turtle syndrome, which is a state of shock from being exposed to cold temperatures, or injury from a boat strike or shark bite. These turtles are then rehabilitated and released home to rejoin the sea turtle population.

For 17 years, a team of staff and volunteers has been committed to patients at the Sea Turtle Hospital. The majority of the hospital’s functions have moved to the first floor as a part of the newest addition to the Sea Turtle Care Center, the Zucker Family Sea Turtle Recovery, but the hospital still functions as an intensive care unit for critical patients.

The Zucker Family Sea Turtle Recovery is both a hospital and a guest experience, allowing aquarium guests to see the full process of rescue, rehabilitation and release of sick and injured sea turtles. Guests are able to get a first-hand view of the real-life rehabilitation. Be sure to stay for a Turtle Talk to hear about the process of rescue, rehabilitation and release from care center staff and learn what it takes to be a sea turtle biologist.

Guests who wish to join in these efforts may become Sea Turtle Guardians by making annual or recurring contributions to the care center. Purchase general admission tickets to the South Carolina Aquarium to get the full Sea Turtle Care Center experience and check out the summer schedule for Turtle Talks.

Folly Gras

Join Charleston’s Largest Mardi Gras Celebration This Weekend At Folly Gras

Couldn’t quite swing the trip down to New Orleans this year? No worries! Charleston knows how to throw a good Mardi Gras celebration too.

The largest Mardi Gras in Charleston, Folly Gras, is back this Saturday and every year the festival brings thousands of people to the city of Folly Beach annually.

The festival includes local vendors, crafts, live music, drink specials, and an all around good time. There will be three stages with different musical acts including Candy Cigarettes, Dangermuffin, Sundy Ledford, and more.

Festivities begin at 10am on Saturday the 23rd with the Folly Gras parade, and wrap up around 4pm. Admission is $10 per person but free for Folly Beach residents and children. Parking is limited so the city of Folly Beach is encouraging visitors to take Lyft or Uber; Lyft coupons will be available at the festival.

Check out this video to see some highlights from Folly Gras last year!

If you’re looking for a fun filled day with great energy and crazy costumes then Folly Gras is definitely the event for you!

Looking to keep the party going? here are other Mardi Gras celebrations also happening in Charleston in the coming weeks at The Royal American, Lola Cajun Food, and Frothy Beard Brewing Company!
