Safe Sounds at Firefly Distillery

Not all concerts are canceled this summer! Now in regulation with social distancing, Firefly Distillery announces “Safe Sounds,” a seven week-long outdoor concert series which began June 12th.

Listen to live music every Friday and Saturday night throughout the months of June and July. Stocked with beer, wine, and local food trucks, this outdoor arena can be enjoyed by up to four guests in each 10×10 safe space.

In order to respect social distancing, Firefly has several precautionary measures in place. Aside from general suggestions of hand-washing, Firefly has several safe spaces on their field so guests are evenly spread out. With 8-ft distances between each 10×10 square, you won’t have to stress about keeping apart. All common surfaces are sanitized after each customer’s use, and several hand sanitizing stations are scattered around the premises.

At this week’s concert on Saturday, June 27th you can expect performances from The Majestics and Lady & The Brass with special guest DJ Natty Heavy. All sets are 21+ with doors open at 6 p.m. and showtime at 7 p.m. Leave your furry friends at home and kick back on the greenspace. Each Safe Space Square is available for four friends starting at $25.00 an individual ticket.

In Remembrance: 5 Years After the Mother Emanuel Shooting

Just five years ago, the nine members of the oldest African Methodist Episcopal Church in the South were devastatingly killed. As an act of terrorism, a white supremacist attended their bible study before opening fire. He’s said to have targeted Mother Emanuel for its stature and history. This 2015 shooting still holds a large piece of Charleston history, especially for the black community. We remember those lost and affected by the Mother Emanuel shooting.

Today, this issue remains as relevant as ever.

Almost four dozen protesters gathered at the Battery last week in honor of the nine victims in the 2015 shooting. This Wednesday is the official anniversary. The group’s call to action honors those who have lost their lives to white supremacy. They were met by a counter group of supporters of the Confederate flag.

With many protests around Charleston, this week is expected to especially highlight these issues. Friday the 19th is the celebration of Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day. The holiday commemorates the ending of slavery throughout the Confederate South. Community members can find numerous ways to celebrate Juneteenth this year. Join Juneteenth Rock Hill on Instagram and Facebook Live for a virtual commemoration.

Airbnb Bans Parties in Charleston Properties

With the warm weather upon us and restaurants reopening their doors, Airbnb guests might be tempted to throw a party in celebration. Airbnb warns that this could now result in a banning from the lodging service app.

In response to Coronavirus, large gatherings and parties are no longer permitted. Stricter rules are coming for renters. With a plethora of Airbnb homes in downtown Charleston, many are to be affected.

In a recent press release, Airbnb states that “While Mayer John Tecklenburg announced the gradual easing of some COVID-19 restrictions, he has continued to emphasize and mandate social distancing, meaning our new policy will continue to prohibit any type of party at an Airbnb listing in Charleston until further notice.”

To reinforce their point, Airbnb temporarily disabled the “event-friendly” search filter. Previously the filter helps to help seek out venues for large gatherings. Without the option, Airbnb hopes to reduce the number of parties.

In a city that’s usually filled with Bachelorette parties and vacation beach-goers, it looks like this Charleston summer will be quieter than usual.

Airbnb has yet to update when they’ll re-allow large gatherings. Until further notice, the app will remain party-free.

Featured Image: Post and Courier

Wearing the title of The Birthplace of Sweet Tea, Summerville’s iconic downtown is the perfect setting for the festival. Already known for its hospitable, charming nature, Summerville takes great pride as the birthplace of the iconic Southern beverage. The Sweet Tea Trail winds through the town and gives visitors a personal experience learning about the history of the town and its ties to sweet tea.

Summerville’s sweet tea history begins in the 1700s when tea plants were imported into the area from China. It wasn’t until 1888 when Dr. Charles Sheperd created the Pinehurst Tea Plantation in Summerville which became the first prosperous tea plantation to produce American grown tea. Long after the death of Dr. Sheperd in 1915, these plants were transported to Wadmalaw Island in 1963 and became the original tea plants at the Charleston Tea Plantation which continues to be in full operation to this day.

Give Back: Volunteers Needed For Community Event

Looking to give back to your local community? You can sign up to volunteer for Safe Kids Day 2019.

Safe Kids Day is a local community event sponsored by MUSC Children’s Health and Safe Kids Charleston Area that raises awareness about preventable childhood injuries. This year it will be held on Saturday, May 18, 2019.

Safe Kids, a worldwide nonprofit organization that works to help keep kids safe and uninjured, was founded in 1988 by Dr. Marty Eichelberger of the Children’s National Health System with support from Johnson & Johnson.

The organization has helped reduce the United States childhood death rate from unintentional injuries, the number one killer of kids in the U.S., by 57 percent by working with more than 400 coalitions and partners to reduce traffic injuries, drownings, falls, burns, poisonings and more.

Without the help of volunteers, this annual event wouldn’t be possible. Volunteers will assist with interactive games and activities that teach children and families safe behaviors to avoid preventable injuries.

You can sign up and learn more about the event here.
