Guide Day In Mount Pleasant

Charleston Trivia! How well do you know your city?

Why is Charleston called the Holy City?

Turns out, there’s actually some debate about that. While Charleston certainly boasts an impressive collection of historic churches, the Post & Courier’s research indicates the phrase came from correspondence between a USC history professor and Charleston Renaissance author John Bennett in the early 1900s.

What famous haunted restaurant in town is named after a dog?

That would be Poogan’s Porch, one of Charleston’s oldest independent culinary establishments. Formerly a historic home, Poogan’s is named after the owner’s original faithful pup and boasts a legacy of supernatural sightings. To this day, dogs of all kinds are welcome at the restaurant (#Pooganspups), though few get to try the infamous Lowcountry cuisine.

How long is the Ravenel Bridge?

If you’ve spent any time in downtown Charleston you’ve seen the large, beautiful white arches of the Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge going across the Cooper River. The bridge is 13,200 feet total in length, connecting Charleston to Mount Pleasant, and is a popular destination to walk, run and bike!

The South Carolina Aquarium has a special care center for which animals?

Boasting thousands of residents (from American alligators to fiddler crabs), Charleston’s aquarium facilities also include a Sea Turtle Care Center. Turtles come in, are given medical treatment, and eventually released back to the wild. Check the website to see ongoing status updates for these sweet animals, and donate if you can!

Sea Turtle Care Center: Rescue, Rehabilitate, Release

Featured Image: Massive Science

The South Carolina Aquarium is home to more than just fish. The aquarium’s Sea Turtle Care Center™ encompasses both the original Sea Turtle Hospital and the newer expansion – the Zucker Family Sea Turtle Recovery.

Every species of sea turtle is threatened or endangered, and the SC Aquarium believes that the preservation of these charismatic animals is critical to the health of the marine ecosystem.

When a sea turtle is found stranded or injured off the coast of South Carolina, the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (SCDNR) brings the animal to the Sea Turtle Care Center for treatment from dedicated staff and volunteers. Sea turtles can arrive suffering from any number of illnesses or injuries. Most commonly, sea turtles are brought in due to either debilitated turtle syndrome, which is a state of shock from being exposed to cold temperatures, or injury from a boat strike or shark bite. These turtles are then rehabilitated and released home to rejoin the sea turtle population.

For 17 years, a team of staff and volunteers has been committed to patients at the Sea Turtle Hospital. The majority of the hospital’s functions have moved to the first floor as a part of the newest addition to the Sea Turtle Care Center, the Zucker Family Sea Turtle Recovery, but the hospital still functions as an intensive care unit for critical patients.

The Zucker Family Sea Turtle Recovery is both a hospital and a guest experience, allowing aquarium guests to see the full process of rescue, rehabilitation and release of sick and injured sea turtles. Guests are able to get a first-hand view of the real-life rehabilitation. Be sure to stay for a Turtle Talk to hear about the process of rescue, rehabilitation and release from care center staff and learn what it takes to be a sea turtle biologist.

Guests who wish to join in these efforts may become Sea Turtle Guardians by making annual or recurring contributions to the care center. Purchase general admission tickets to the South Carolina Aquarium to get the full Sea Turtle Care Center experience and check out the summer schedule for Turtle Talks.

A portion of the money donated will go to the Kids Coast play area. Kids Coast will now have a ‘soft play-area’ for children to learn and play in a safe space. It will include soft creatures for the kids to climb on with learning experiences such as monthly reading series, provided by PNC volunteers. The aquarium is excited to reach kids from a younger age and educate them about marine life.

PNC Bank has 2 offices in the Charleston region, including one downtown and one in Mount Pleasant. The PNC Foundation receives funding from PNC Financial Services Group. Last year the foundation reported $72 million in grants given. This group is based in Pittsburgh but, reaches 19 states, mostly along the eastern side of the United States.
