From Martha Stewart and Snoop Dogg, Jackie Robinson and Richard Nixon, to George W. Bush and Michelle Obama, the world is full of surprising and unlikely friendships. Turns out, you can learn a lot from being friends with someone who is the complete opposite of you. As a result of that unlikely friendship, some amazing things can transpire.
Take Trey Gowdy and Tim Scott, for example.
Both are very high profile political figures, both with very different backgrounds. Scott, who is black, grew up in a single-parent household right here in Charleston before making his way to Washington. Gowdy made his own way there from a career as a South Carolina state prosecutor. Now, the two have collaborated and co-authored a book,”Unified: How Our Unlikely Friendship Gives Us Hope for a Divided Country.” They are committed to sharing their story to encourage and inspire others.
What the world needs right now are more duos like Gowdy and Scott, more unlikely friendships. Focusing on loving and supporting each other during this time is important because of the outcome. We need to respect one another’s thoughts and opinions. If we do not do this, our country is going to go to a place of no return.
According to media notes taken at a press release in 2017:
“After the Charleston Emanuel AME Church shooting in their home state of South Carolina, they became determined to foster healing and reconciliation across racial, ethnic, ideological and other divides in our country,” the notes said.
With the introduction of their book, they hope to encourage unity across all the lines that so often divide… socio-economic, racial, regional, and even political. The goal is to encourage the country to strengthen our bonds and eliminate our fears to create friendships. Friendships that can serve as a bridge to a brighter, more unified future.
The book tour will be comprised of four identical events featuring Trey Gowdy and Tim Scott as they share from their hearts the message and meaning behind their book. The book tour will take place from April 4-7 with most events beginning at 7:00 pm.
At the conclusion of each event, both speakers will be signing copies of their new book.
“Unified: How Our Unlikely Friendship Gives Us Hope for a Divided Country” is set for publication April 3, 2018 from Tyndale House Publishers.
